What do you mean by that?

What do you mean by that? How did you come to that conclusion?

Recently, a couple of AOI staff members were blessed with the opportunity to take a church youth group to California to do surveys on the beach and college campus. Surveying and Evangelism can be a scary and intimidating thing for anyone let alone our high school students. But we learned a ton on that trip including how to use the above questions. When a person on the street makes a claim – ask questions. Asking the other person questions takes the pressure off of you and asking sincerely and being willing to listen to the person actually dignifies them. So often claims are made but often there are inconsistencies or a lack of evidence for such claims when you dig a little deeper.

Ex. Person A: “Christians are intolerant.”

Person B: “What do you mean by intolerant?”

Person A: “People are intolerant when they don’t accept all other viewpoints.”

Person B: “So Christians are intolerant because we don’t accept all other views as being true…just like how you are intolerant because you don’t accept the Christian view.”

(This is just a quick example. Make sure you conduct your conversation out of love, gentleness, and respect (1 Pet 3:15) and not to win the argument but to win the person.)
