Thank a Plant!

When you get up in the morning, take a deep breath and thank a plant!  Plants take in the carbon dioxide that we breathe out and they give back oxygen that you and I need in order to breathe.

As we get dressed, thank a plant!  Your clothes are probably made from materials that came from plants.

On your walk to the kitchen for breakfast, look at the building around you, and thank a plant!  Much of the building materials in your home and furniture probably came from plants.

As you sit down for breakfast, thank a plant!  If you have any fruit juice, it came from a plant.  If you have cereal, it came from a plant.  If you put sugar on your cereal, it came from a plant.  Add a banana or strawberries and…they came from plants!  The milk that you put on your cereal came from a cow that eats plants.  The cardboard containers that held the juice, milk, and cereal came from a plant.  If you have waffles or pancakes for breakfast, thank a plant!  They were made form grains that came from plants.  If you had toast and jam…they came from plants.  The bacon and eggs you might have had came from animals that eat plants.

If you take a vitamin or other kind of medicine, many of the ingredients probably came from a plant.  If there is a beautiful vase of flowers on the table to add cheer to the room…thank a plant!  As you read your Bible before starting the day, thank a plant!  The pages of God’s Word are written on paper, which comes from a tree, which is a plant.  Thank a plant!

When you go outside and see a lawn, thank a plant!  Plants help hold the soil together so that the dirt does not wash away whenever it rains.  As you go throughout the day, look around you and see all the things that came from plants: food, cloth, wood, rubber, oils, medicines, poisons, and thousands of other things.

Plants are amazing factories.  From nothing but air, dirt, water, and sunshine, plants continually give us almost everything you can think of that we need for life.  So, thank a plant!

Actually, after you thank a plant, think about where plants came from and then, Thank God!  “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth; and it was so…and God saw that it was good.  And the evening and the morning were the third day.” (Genesis 1:11, 12b, 13)

Not only did God create plants on day 3 of Creation, but He also made them so that they could reproduce their own kind.  Most plants do this with seeds and they do it very well.  If a farmer plants 20 pounds of corn to an acre of land, he will harvest about 100 bushels of corn.  One bushel of corn weighs about 56 pounds.  So from 20 pounds of seed you might get 5,600 pounds (or more) of corn!  This is just weighing the corn seed (kernels).  In addition to this, the actual corn plant (stalk) can be ground up and used for silage (cow food).  Kernels of corn are used for seeds, food, oils, fuels, and many other useful things.  So, thank a plant!

Scientists can carefully study a seed and find out what chemicals it is made of.  We can take those chemicals and put them all together, but we have never been able to make a seed that will grow.  Yet, we can take a seed that God has created, and it will grow like crazy.  Even wheat seeds from Egypt that are believed to be about 4,000 years old will grow when given water!  Plants and their seeds are amazing things of wonder that God has created.  So, thank a plant!  Better yet, thank God!
